Episode summary

In this episode of The People-Driven CEO Podcast, Shane sits down with Dr. Shazhan Ahmad, pediatric endocrinologist, Clinical Professor at UBC and Founder & CEO of Haibu Health, to talk about healthcare, entrepreneurship and building a more proactive future for people living with diabetes. Haibu Health is focused on helping patients, families and clinicians use health data earlier so they can prevent avoidable crises and make better decisions together. Shazhan shares how years of working with children and families living with diabetes shaped her understanding of where traditional healthcare can fall short. She explains how disconnected data from glucose monitors, insulin pumps, wearables and medical records can make it harder to see risk early and why bringing that information together has the potential to change chronic care. The conversation also explores Shazhan’s transition from physician and researcher to entrepreneur, the realities of commercializing healthcare innovation and what it means to build technology around real patient and clinician needs rather than technology for its own sake. At the centre of Haibu’s approach is a model Shazhan describes as human-led and technology-assisted. The goal is not to remove people from healthcare, but to give clinicians, patients and families better information so they can act sooner, reduce unnecessary suffering and help people living with diabetes thrive. For Shazhan, being human ultimately comes back to connection and the way we experience one another through our senses, relationships and shared presence.

Meet the guest

Dr. Shazhan Amed

Dr. Shazan Amed is a pediatric endocrinologist, physician entrepreneur and the founder and CEO of Haibu Health. After more than 13 years of medical training across Canada, she began her career at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, where her work focused on childhood diabetes and improving patient care through research and data.

Her experience caring for children and families living with Type 1 diabetes ultimately led her into digital health and entrepreneurship. After helping develop a technology-based solution backed by more than $9 million in research and non-dilutive funding, Dr. Amed took the leap from physician and researcher to founder, building a company focused on using technology to improve healthcare while continuing to care for patients.

Her work sits at the intersection of medicine, technology and entrepreneurship, driven by a belief that innovation should strengthen, rather than replace, the human connection at the heart of healthcare.
